Bern Medical Faculty: Excellence in Academic Teaching

Prof. Dr. Dr. Sören Huwendiek's membership of the faculty has been extended for a further four years on the basis of his excellent academic performance in teaching. We offer our sincere congratulations.

We congratulate Prof. Dr. med. Berger-Estilita on her appointment as honorary professor. This great recognition reflects her outstanding achievements in the field of medical education.

One of the joint prize winners of the Society for Medical Education’s ‘JME Publication Award’ 2025 for an outstanding publication in the field of medical university teaching was the following publication (co-author Sören Huwendiek, IML):

Artificial Intelligence. Funded with 500,000 University of Bern

Congratulations on securing funding for the project «LLM4Humans – Empowering humans through local Large Language Models (LLM) in research and clinical practice» to Prof. Huwendiek. We, at the IML are proud to share this success, which supports this project focused on developing secure, locally operated large language models (LLMs) and guidance for clinical and research use. A fantastic achievement and an important step toward trustworthy AI in healthcare and research. 

The topic will be explored within two dedicated PhD positions. This project is a collaboration of the IML with the Department of Clinical Research Bern (Prof. Benjamin Victor Ineichen (Co-applicant)).
